How to ask your roommate to pay you back

You paid the bill, and your roommate's share is still open. These messages ask for it clearly without making the flat tense. Copy one, fill in the brackets, and send it in your group chat or a direct message.

Copy-ready messages

First reminder, the same day you pay

Send this as soon as the bill is paid, while everyone still remembers it.

Hey! I just paid the electric bill for October: [total]. Your share is [amount]. Could you send it over when you get a chance this week? Thanks!

Friendly follow-up, a few days later

Use this if a week has passed and the share is still open.

Hi, quick nudge on the electric bill from last week. Your share was [amount]. No rush today, but could you send it by [day]? I want to keep our bills even before rent is due.

Several small costs added up

For groceries, cleaning supplies, or takeout that one person kept covering.

Hey, I put together what I covered this month: groceries [amount], cleaning stuff [amount], wifi [amount]. Your share comes to [total share]. Happy to show the receipts. Can we settle up by [day]?

Rent you covered

When you fronted part of the rent so it was paid on time.

Hi, I covered your part of rent this month so it went in on time: [amount]. Could you pay me back by [date]? If that's hard this month, tell me and we can agree on two smaller payments.

Firm but kind, after several reminders

When the friendly messages didn't work. Keep it short and specific.

Hey, I've asked a few times about the [amount] for [bill], and it's still open. I need it back by [date]. If something is going on, let's talk tonight and set a plan, but I can't keep covering it.

For bigger amounts, agree a plan instead of chasing. Enter the total, how many payments, the dates and the payment method, then copy a clear note to send. No account needed.

1[date]200
2[date]200
3[date]200
Hi Sam, thanks for talking this through. Here's the plan we agreed for my share of October rent I covered: 600 in total, paid in 3 payments by bank transfer:
1. 200 by [date]
2. 200 by [date]
3. 200 by [date]

Could you reply "agreed" so we both have it in writing? I'll confirm each payment when it arrives. If a date stops working, tell me before it's due and we'll adjust it.

Questions

How do I ask a roommate for money without it being awkward?

Make it routine. Send a short message the day you pay the bill with the total, their share, and a day to pay by. When every bill gets the same kind of message, nobody reads it as personal.

How long should I wait before reminding a roommate to pay me back?

Send the first request the same day you pay. If the share is still open after about a week, send a friendly follow-up with a specific day. After two or three reminders, switch to a short, firm message and offer to talk about a plan.

What if my roommate keeps not paying me back?

Stop fronting costs for them, put the open amounts in writing, and agree on a date or a payment plan. For rent or a deposit, check your lease and local rules. If it keeps happening, a written roommate bill agreement gives everyone the same rules to point to.

Is there an easier way to keep track of who owes what?

Yes. IPaid lets you log a bill you paid, splits it between roommates, keeps each share open until it's settled, and gives you a short reminder note to copy into your group chat. One flat is free.

How do I set up a repayment plan with a roommate?

Agree the total, the number of payments, the dates and how they'll pay, then put it in one written message and ask them to reply "agreed". The free repayment plan note generator on this page writes that message for you. It's a friendly note, not legal advice.

Is it okay to let a roommate pay me back in installments?

Yes, for larger amounts like rent you covered. Small, dated payments are easier to keep than one big one. Keep the plan in writing and confirm each payment when it arrives.
